Waldemar Januszczak explores the mystery of the famous old tale, which has seen artists through the ages conjure extraordinary visions to fill the missing details of the story.
A baby in a manger, a star in the sky, wise men, shepherds... We all think we know the story of the Nativity, but the original biblical tale is surprisingly light on detail. As a result, artists through the centuries have indulged their own flights of imagination to interpret the scene. Some added just a flourish here or there, others layered their paintings with complex visual metaphors and hidden meanings aplenty.

The Nativity has been performed in schools all over the country in Christmas and holiday season. But with so many details missing from the story, artists through the ages have been free to imagine extraordinary visions with extraordinary meanings.
