'Once Upon a Time': Five Theories About Who Could Die in the Winter Finale

Hell hath no fury like a Dark One scorned, and Captain Hook’s new evil persona is ready to take everyone in Storybrooke to the underworld. During Sunday's winter finale of ABC's Once Upon a Time, Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) is teaming with all of the former dark ones — led by Nimue (Caroline Ford) — to snuff out all the light in town, and he doesn’t care who he has to take down to make it happen.

Even though O’Donoghue told THR that he doesn’t necessarily want to kill Emma (Jennifer Morrison), she could easily be a casualty of this plan. But more likely, he’ll take down someone whom she loves dearly to make sure she stays out of his way.

Below, The Hollywood Reporter theorizes who could bite the dust in the winter finale, weighing the possibilities for his nemesis Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle), Emma’s family members, and a few residents who are also in danger.

Rumplestiltskin

The No. 1 person on Dark Hook’s hit list is Rumplestiltskin. Even though Gold was able to best him during their duel aboard the Jolly Roger, that doesn’t mean Hook will give up without a fight. Everything he’s doing is leading up to full revenge on Rumple, so either the Crocodile will die, or Hook could kill Belle (Emilie de Ravin) instead, taking away the one person whom Rumple loves most.

Emma

Love has not conquered all so far for Emma and Hook, and his co-Dark One is the biggest obstacle in his path right now. Even if he doesn’t want to kill his former love, his thirst for revenge and all of the darkness clouding his judgment could cause him to stab her with Excalibur — the only way to truly kill a Dark One — unless she’s able to convince him to change his evil plans.

Mary Margaret and David

Even if Hook doesn’t murder Emma, he could kill her loved ones. Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) and/or David (Josh Dallas) could be caught in the crossfire of this battle of good vs. evil, whether they’re trying to stop Hook or trying to protect their daughter. They’ve sacrificed a lot for her, but this would be the ultimate one.

Henry

As with Mary Margaret and David, Henry (Jared Gilmore) dying could just be a casualty of the dark war. Henry recently worked with Emma on Operation Cobra Part II to rescue the dreamcatchers, and if he’s on board with helping her again, he could be in the wrong place at the wrong time or be kidnapped by Hook and the Dark Ones as bait for Emma.

Zelena

Zelena (Rebecca Mader) and Hook agreed to stay out of each other’s way, but there is a chance that the Wicked Witch could change her tune to try to earn Regina (Lana Parrilla) and Robin Hood’s (Sean Maguire) trust. They don’t want her to have custody of her daughter, but if she saves the day and defeats Hook, maybe they would reconsider. Probably not, but Zelena could still be killed if she gets in Hook’s way.

There’s also the option of everyone in Storybrooke going to the underworld and many casualties happening. It could be a real bloodbath, or Hook could be defeated and no one will die. Let the countdown begin.

Once Upon a Time’s winter finale airs Sunday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. on ABC. Stay tuned to THR's The Live Feed for more coverage.
