BET Renews 'Being Mary Jane' for Season 4

BET has renewed the Gabrielle Union-led series for a fourth season, the network announced Wednesday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour.

Production will kick off in Atlanta later this year.

The series has been a strong performer for BET since it first debuted as an original TV movie back in 2013. For its entire three-season run, Being Mary Jane has also ranked as the No. 1 scripted cable series among black viewers in the 18-49 window. The most recent season, which wrapped in December, averaged 2.54 million viewers for the channel in live-plus-three day stats, a lift of 55 percent. The series also 1.3 million viewers in the demo, making it one of the Top 5 cable shows.

Union took the stage Wednesday at TCA to ask her boss, if the series would be coming back. The delay in announcing a season four renewal stems from the departure of creator and showrunner Mara Brock Akil, who will head to Warner Bros. Television in May as part of an overall deal she and her husband, Sam Akil, signed last year. Its unclear who will take the reigns on the series as showrunner.

The renewal comes a day after the Viacom-owned cable network launched its third scripted series, Zoe Ever After, to join Being Mary Jane and Real Husbands of Hollywood.
